Lesson 1-2

Use of sensors

The second lesson is about improving Milo, the scientist rover. We start the class reviewing the concepts already covered, such as the idea of a robot. With all the new information the students received in the first session, it is very likely that they did not realise that they did not use the sensors, therefore the robot did not collect information from the environment, even when we defined a robot in that way.

That will take us to the next level, adding sensors, collecting information from the environment and take decisions depending on that information. We cover the models Milo B and Milo C during this class, learning how to use the motion sensor and the tilt sensor. This is the first contact because they will need some more examples to master the programming of the behaviour based on the sensors.

What students learn

In this class, they learned:
  • How Engineering Design Process works. The students improve the model built in the previous session. The robot is not designed from scratch, it is based on something already invented.
  • Programming fundamentals. Triggering actions responding to events.
  • Basic mechanisms. Levers.
