Drawing machines

This week our students have been drawing with machines.

To build some of the robots, we reused designs such as the flood gate or the earthquake simulator. In other cases the students were inspired by these simple but effective designs by Daniel Sangiacomo, Meanwhile, another student, Mario, faced the challenge to figure out how to copy the Spirograph by Yoshihito Isogawa without building instructions.

The following video is a summary of their wonderful work.

Some of the designs did not produce fixed patterns but random lines. That added more fun. These are the outcomes of the machines built by Juan and Yago, after adding some extra lines of human creativity.

This activity gives the opportunity to see many approaches for the same problem, none of them being better than the others. It is also a perfect excuse to review different mechanisms used to transform forces and movement.
